| Capture Mission | Lt Smith was on a mission over North Vietnam. He delivered his ordnance on an important strategic target in the face of intense antiaircraft fire, SAMs and attaching hostile aircraft. He shot down a MIG-17 in aerial combat before he was shot down. He was subsequently awarded a Silver Star for his performance on this mission. |
